The answers to today's Connections, game #1039, are…

  • YELLOW: GRADUATION GEAR CAP, DIPLOMA, GOWN, TASSEL
  • GREEN: TEDIOUS UNDERTAKING CHORE, GRIND, HASSLE, TRIAL
  • BLUE: OVERSIMPLISTIC FACILE, FLIP, SHALLOW, TRITE
  • PURPLE: SHAPES OF CHESS PIECES CASTLE, CROWN, HORSE, MITER
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 2 mistakes

I didn’t go to college or university and I sometimes think it holds me back — it definitely has held me back in terms of earning power — and today it stopped me from getting GRADUATION GEAR without making two mistakes.

For some reason I can’t quite explain, I thought that MITER was an essential part of graduation day attire — not that I actually know what a MITER is, it just sounded college-like.

This embarrassment aside, I managed to complete the rest of today’s challenge without much of a hitch, but by then the damage was done. Let’s just agree not to talk about it.

Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Tuesday, April 14, game #1038)

  • YELLOW: THINGS STORED BY A BROWSER BOOKMARK, CACHE, COOKIE, HISTORY
  • GREEN: BOXING TERMS BELL, GLOVES, RING, ROUND
  • BLUE: TILT LEAN, LIST, PITCH, TIP
  • PURPLE: FREE____ LANCE, MASON, STYLE, WAY

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
